The Princess of Weaving
2011
36” x 36”
Machine pieced
Antique Japanese cotton and silk, modern hand-dyed cotton (some I dyed myself), blends from many countries.
The idea for this quilt came from woven bamboo baskets. In Japan many of these baskets have very unusual shapes; some actually resemble flower vases more than baskets. The narrow strips of fabric suggest slender pieces of bamboo which can be bent and thus woven into the desired shapes. Since all of these baskets are hand-made, the width of the strips will vary. To suggest this hand-made quality I have deliberately made some of the strips slightly out of parallel.
