This quilt is titled Refinish because I finished it twice. The 24″ center mandala was completed 10 years ago, envisioned as a restrained kaleidoscopic image with more background than figure. It was inspired by the moment when a two-mirror state-of-the-art-kaleidoscope is first brought to the eye and a few pieces of glass floating in a viscous liquid form a slow, symmetrical pattern before exploding into a hypnotizing dance that fills up the viewing field.
I revisited, revised and refinished the piece in 2023, adding the complex patchwork, provoking some tension between less and more, until the size became the mandatory 40″ square.
