Freedom from Hunger: Cabbage and Potatoes
2010
82″ x 73″
Teresa Barkley makes quilts that are the synthesis of many influences: vintage fabrics and postage stamps, a career in patternmaking, and heirloom scrapbooks. With each quilt, she combines materials that were never intended to be joined, such as conventional quilt fabrics and found object fabrics: flour sacks, commemorative handkerchiefs, clothing labels, tablecloths, and linen book pages. Teresa feels there is a special beauty in materials that have endured time and wear, and she designs to juxtapose fabrics with different ages and purposes. Giving new life and new meaning to discarded materials is one of her primary goals.
