Time Runs Out
Time runs out for our hapless hero, Harold Lloyd, who clings desperately to the huge timepiece in his movie, “Safety Last.” His drama unfolds, a twenty-fourth of a second at a time, in a series of still images pouring over the movie screen. Our eyes and our brains are fooled into perceiving continuous motion, but dividing time up in this way seems artificial. Real time flows — although philosophers and physicians may argue that this isn’t true — and the pace of this flow varies according to our emotional state.
